SKYWARN\u00ae is a volunteer program with\nbetween 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers\nhelp keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports\nof severe weather to the National Weather Service.<\/span><br><\/span><\/p><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><br><\/span>\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\">Although SKYWARN\u00ae spotters provide essential information for\nall types of weather hazards, the focus is reporting on severe local\nthunderstorms. In an average year, the United States experiences more than\n10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more than 1,000 tornadoes.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"><br><\/span>\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\">Since the program started in the 1970s, the information\nprovided by SKYWARN\u00ae spotters, coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved\nsatellite and other data, has enabled NWS to issue more timely and accurate\nwarnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods. SKYWARN\u00ae storm\nspotters form the nation&#8217;s first line of defense against severe weather.
